Slovakia's motorway network centers on the D1, running east from Bratislava through the Vah valley toward Zilina, with ongoing extensions toward Kosice. Some eastern sections are still single-carriageway expressways rather than full motorways. All motorways and expressways require an electronic vignette (e-znamka), tied to your license plate with no physical sticker. Vignettes are available for 10 days, 30 days, or one year, purchased online at eznamka.sk or at border petrol stations. Fees change over time, so check current prices before travel. Road quality is good on main routes; rural roads in the east can be narrower. Border crossings into Austria, the Czech Republic, and Hungary are open Schengen borders. The Ukrainian crossing at Vysne Nemecke is a full external checkpoint and can have long queues.

Slovakia enforces a zero blood alcohol limit. Headlights are required at all times. Winter tires are mandatory from November 15 through March 31, and snow chains may be needed on mountain passes. Speed limits are 50 km/h in towns, 90 km/h on rural roads, and 130 km/h on motorways. Fines are payable on the spot. Minimum driving age is 18. Emergency number is 112. The road from Poprad into the High Tatras climbs quickly to alpine trailheads and is one of the most striking short drives in the region. One detail worth knowing: the vignette is registered to a specific license plate, so verify it covers your exact vehicle before joining any motorway.
