Road network

Serbia's motorway network, the autoput, covers the main corridors connecting Belgrade to the Hungarian border in the north, to Nis and the Macedonian border in the south, and to the Croatian border in the west. The two principal routes are the E-75 and the E-70. Both are tolled, with fees calculated by distance and collected at entry and exit booths. Payment is accepted in Serbian dinars or euros, and credit cards work at most toll stations. Toll fees change over time, so checking current rates before travel is advisable. Away from the motorways, road quality drops noticeably, and mountain roads in the south and west can be narrow and slow. Road signs appear in both Cyrillic and Latin script.

Speed limits are 50 km/h in towns, 80 km/h on rural roads, and 130 km/h on motorways. Headlights must be on at all times. Winter tires are mandatory from November 1 through April 1, or whenever winter conditions exist. The blood alcohol limit is 0.03%, effectively zero tolerance, and on-the-spot fines apply for violations. Speed cameras are common on motorways and main roads. The minimum driving age is 18, and the emergency number is 112. Fuel is priced lower than in most of Western Europe, and LPG is available at larger stations. EV charging outside Belgrade and Novi Sad is limited.

The most distinctive drive in Serbia is the road through Djerdap Gorge along the Romanian border, where the route runs beneath sheer cliffs above the Danube, past the medieval Golubac Fortress. Many visitors are caught off guard by how strictly the 0.03% alcohol limit is enforced: one drink before driving is a genuine legal risk, not a technicality.
