Road network

Monaco is a single urban area of roughly 2 square kilometers with no motorways and a 50 km/h speed limit throughout. Every road is a city street, surfaces are excellent, and the layout is defined by steep hillsides, tight bends, and tunnels cut through rock. Access from France is via the A8 motorway, a toll road on the French side with a dedicated Monaco exit; check current French motorway toll rates before travel. There are no border controls between Monaco and France in either direction.

Parking is the main practical difficulty. Street parking is almost nonexistent, and the principality relies on hillside garages connected to street level by elevators and escalators. Identify your target garage before arrival. Headlights are required at night. Winter tires are not required. The blood alcohol limit is 0.05 percent, the minimum driving age is 18, and the emergency number is 112. Monaco has no toll roads of its own.

The streets you drive on are the same streets used by the Formula 1 Grand Prix, including the Fairmont Hairpin and the tunnel under the Fairmont Hotel. Outside of Grand Prix week in late May, when those roads are closed to regular traffic, the circuit is simply the public road network.
