Road network

Andorra has no motorways and no toll roads. The entire country is mountain driving, built around two main roads: the CG-1 running north to south through Andorra la Vella and up to the Port d'Envalira pass or the free Tunel d'Envalira, and the CG-2 heading east to the French border at Pas de la Casa. Speed limits are 50 km/h in towns and 90 km/h on rural roads. Daytime running lights are required at all times. The blood alcohol limit is 0.05 percent and the minimum driving age is 18. The emergency number is 112. Note that approach roads on the French and Spanish sides of the border may carry tolls, so check current charges before travel.

Winter tires or snow chains are mandatory from November 1 through May 15, and police enforce this at border crossings. The Port d'Envalira, the highest paved road in the Pyrenees at 2,408 meters, closes during heavy snowfall and diverts traffic through the tunnel. Traffic through Andorra la Vella can be heavy on weekends and during ski season, as the capital has no bypass. Fuel is significantly cheaper than in France or Spain, and filling up before crossing the border is standard practice among regular visitors. The Tunel d'Envalira, free to use in both directions, sits above 2,000 meters elevation, making it the highest road tunnel in the Pyrenees.
