Whitney lies in Herefordshire's border country, where the A438 connects Hereford (25km east) with Wales via the historic toll bridge over the River Wye. The B4350 provides an alternative route north through hill country, whilst local traffic uses these roads for Hereford commutes. The privately-owned toll bridge remains one of Britain's last, charging drivers a small fee to cross into Wales.
