Winnfield is a small city of about 4,000 people in Louisiana's pine country, roughly 90 miles northwest of Alexandria. US Highway 167 runs north-south through town toward Monroe, while Highway 156 heads west to Natchitoches. The town sits among rolling hills covered in longleaf pine forests. Winnfield holds the unusual distinction of being the birthplace of both Huey P. Long and his son Russell Long, the only town in America to produce two U.S. senators from the same family.
