WaKeeney is a small farming town along Interstate 70 in west-central Kansas, about 45 miles west of Hays. It serves as a convenient rest stop for cross-country travelers, with gas stations and restaurants near the highway exits. The town sits in wheat country at 2,300 feet elevation, experiencing hot summers and cold winters typical of the High Plains. Its massive grain elevator complex is visible for miles across the prairie.
