Umatilla sits where the Columbia River forms the Oregon-Washington border, connected by a bridge that carries Interstate 82 between the two states. This agricultural town of 7,500 serves as a natural stopping point for travelers heading between the Tri-Cities and eastern Oregon destinations like Pendleton, about 30 miles southeast via Highway 730. The former Umatilla Chemical Depot, once a military weapons storage facility, now operates as an industrial complex after completing its mission in 2012.
