South Prairie is a tiny mountain town of about 300 people in Pierce County, roughly 30 miles southeast of Tacoma. Take SR-162 south through Puyallup and Orting to get there from the metro area. The town sits in a forested valley along the Carbon River and serves as a gateway to Mount Rainier's northwest entrance. It's the eastern terminus of the popular Foothills Trail, a 25-mile paved path built on an old railroad grade.
