Smithsburg is a small Washington County town of about 3,100 people located along historic US Route 40, about 10 miles east of Hagerstown. The town sits at the junction of US 40 and Maryland Route 64, making it a natural stopping point between Baltimore and western Maryland. Most visitors arrive via I-70 to US 40, while Route 64 connects north to Pennsylvania. The preserved 1872 train station downtown houses the historical society and showcases the town's railroad heritage.
