Rock Island, OK

Rock Island is a small community in eastern Oklahoma's Le Flore County, home to about 680 people in the forested Ouachita Mountains. Highway 9 runs right through town, connecting west to McAlester (45 miles) and east toward Fort Smith, Arkansas (30 miles). US 271 through nearby Poteau provides north-south access. The area's economy has roots in timber and coal mining. The town's post office has operated from the same building since 1898.
