Princeville, a small town of about 1,600 people in eastern North Carolina, sits along the Tar River where US Highway 258 crosses between Rocky Mount and Scotland Neck. Most visitors arrive via US 258 from Rocky Mount (20 minutes south) or connect from I-95 through Rocky Mount. The town was incorporated in 1885 as Freedom Hill, making it one of America's oldest African American-chartered municipalities.
