Portland is a tiny borough in Pennsylvania's Slate Belt, about an hour north of Philly via I-476 and Route 33. The town grew around 19th-century slate quarries that supplied roofing material across the Northeast. Most visitors arrive from the Poconos via Route 611 or from the Lehigh Valley on Route 191. The old slate quarry, now called the Blue Hole, has become a local swimming spot with distinctively colored water.
