Old Fort is a small mountain town of 555 people in western North Carolina's foothills, sitting right on Interstate 40 about 25 miles east of Asheville. The town serves as a gateway to the Blue Ridge Mountains, with I-40 providing easy access from Charlotte (100 miles) and the Triangle region. US Highway 70 runs through downtown as the main local road. The Mountain Gateway Museum, located in a restored 1930s railroad depot, tells the story of the challenging railroad construction through these mountains.
