Newtonia is a small town of 244 people in southwestern Missouri, about 15 miles southeast of Joplin via Highway 86. Most visitors take I-44 to Exit 18A near Neosho, then follow Highway 86 southwest. The town sits in rolling prairie country near the Kansas border and hosts two Civil War battlefield sites from separate engagements in 1862 and 1864.
