Mertarvik is a tiny village of 12 people on Nelson Island in western Alaska, completely cut off from any road system. You can only reach it by small plane through Mertarvik Airport or by boat in summer. The village was built as a relocation site for residents of nearby Newtok, whose original community was being swallowed by coastal erosion.
