The surrounding area features rolling wheat fields, pine forests, and the Kettle River Range, with a continental climate of cold winters and warm, dry summers. The city's name comes from the historic Kettle Falls on the Columbia River, once a major Native American salmon fishing site now submerged beneath Lake Roosevelt.
