Hyden is a small Appalachian town of 325 people nestled in Leslie County's mountains along the Middle Fork Kentucky River. Reach it via winding KY Route 80 from Hazard (30 miles east) or Somerset (west), or KY Route 149 from Jackson. The nearest interstate is I-75 at London, about 60 miles west. It's famous for the Frontier Nursing Service, established in 1925 by Mary Breckinridge, whose nurse-midwives originally traveled to patients on horseback.
