Most long-distance visitors come from Springfield (60 miles southeast) on US 54. The surrounding prairie features gentle hills, creek valleys, and endless corn and soybean fields. Griggsville calls itself the "Purple Martin Capital of the Nation" for the thousands of migratory birds that nest in elaborate martin houses throughout town each summer.
