Gates is a small farming community of 619 people in western Tennessee's Lauderdale County. Located about 45 miles northeast of Memphis via US Highway 51, it sits amid the flat cotton and soybean fields of the Mississippi River floodplain. State Route 19 connects it east to Ripley, while US-51 provides the main north-south corridor through the county. The town maintains one of the few remaining independent post offices in rural Lauderdale County.
