About Fort Lewis, WA

Fort Lewis is a major Army base in Pierce County, about 50 miles south of Seattle via I-5 Exit 119. The installation combines with McChord Air Force Base to form Joint Base Lewis-McChord, one of the West Coast's largest military facilities. Drivers from Seattle take I-5 south through Tacoma, while those from Portland head north for about two hours. The base sits between Tacoma and Olympia in rolling terrain where morning fog often drifts in from Puget Sound. Artillery training here produces cannon thunder that regularly rumbles across the countryside.
