Derby is a suburban city of 26,000 just southeast of Wichita, easily reached via Rock Road or K-15 in about 20 minutes. Long-distance travelers typically use I-35 to the Kansas Turnpike, then I-135 south toward Wichita. The city sits in the Arkansas River valley with flat terrain and rich soils, close to Wichita's airport and several aviation facilities. Derby operates its own municipal airport that hosts an annual vintage aircraft air show.
