Custer sits in the Black Hills at 5,314 feet, serving as the southern gateway to Mount Rushmore and Crazy Horse Memorial. Located at the junction of US 16 and US 385, it's a 25-mile scenic drive west from Rapid City and the starting point for the famous Needles Highway. The town houses South Dakota's oldest continuously operating courthouse, a red brick Victorian building from 1881.
