Cornelius is a lakefront town about 20 miles north of Charlotte along Interstate 77, sitting on Lake Norman's northern shore. The main route is I-77 from Charlotte (30 minutes) or from the north via Statesville. State Route 21 runs along the lake with scenic water views. The town serves as a Lake Norman gateway with shopping centers clustered near I-77 exits and residential areas spreading toward the water. Cornelius maintains one of Lake Norman's few remaining free public boat launches at Ramsey Creek Park.
