Carbon Hill is a small farming community of 441 people in Grundy County, about 60 miles southwest of Chicago. Take I-55 to Exit 240 near Dwight, then head west on local roads through corn and soybean country. Most visitors arrive via I-55 from Chicago or I-80 from the Quad Cities, while Route 17 handles east-west traffic. The town got its name from old coal mines, and you can still spot remnants of mine shafts in the surrounding woods.
