The town sits in rich Mississippi River bottomland where corn, soybeans, and tobacco dominate the landscape. Highway 62 provides the main east-west route through town, while State Route 123 runs north-south to communities like Wickliffe. Just west of Bardwell, the historic Dorena-Hickman Ferry still carries vehicles across the Mississippi River to Missouri.
