Ashland is Clay County's seat in east-central Alabama, home to about 1,800 people in the Appalachian foothills. US Highway 280 runs right through town, connecting to Birmingham 50 miles southwest and continuing east toward Georgia. From Atlanta, take I-20 West to US 431 North, then US 280 West for about two hours. The 1906 sandstone courthouse with its prominent clock tower anchors the town square.
