Whithorn lies 20 miles south of Newton Stewart in Dumfries and Galloway, reached via the A714 from the A75 trunk road. From central Scotland, most drivers use the A77 through Ayr or A701 via Dumfries to join the A75 westbound. Whithorn claims Scotland's oldest recorded church, built by Saint Ninian around 397 AD.
