Wallgate forms part of Wigan's urban core in Greater Manchester, easily reached via M6 junctions 25 or 26 onto the A49. The area sits on the flat Lancashire Plain with typical northwest weather patterns. Local routes connect neighbouring districts like Poolstock and Water Heyes, whilst longer journeys to Manchester follow the M61-M6 corridor. Electric vehicle drivers can access roughly 200 public fast chargers across the wider Wigan area. The district takes its name from the medieval toll gate that once stood near the present railway station.
