Tarmonbarry straddles the River Shannon in County Roscommon where the river narrows, creating a natural crossing point between Ireland's east and west. The town sits about 120 kilometers from Dublin via the M4 to Longford, then south on local roads, with Galway roughly 80 kilometers southwest. Most locals regularly travel the short 15-kilometer route to Longford on everyday business. The highlight here is Tarmonbarry Lock, part of the Shannon navigation system that lets boats navigate the different water levels on Ireland's longest river.
