Tarkastad, deep in the Eastern Cape, is easiest reached via the R61 from Queenstown or Cradock, both under 80 km away for a quick run. Long-haul visitors come from as far as Port Elizabeth, Kimberley, or even Simon's Town near Cape Town. It's proper Karoo-fringe country, dry and open, with the Winterberg mountains nearby, so fill up before you go and don't rely on finding an EV charger. The town's name comes from the Khoikhoi word for the nearby Tarka River, dating back to 1852.
