Staithes perches dramatically on the North Yorkshire coast, its red-roofed cottages cascading down a narrow ravine to a tiny harbour. Reach it via the A174 coastal road from Whitby (12 miles) or Saltburn, turning down an extremely steep village lane. Parking is severely limited at the village top. Captain James Cook once worked here as a shop assistant before his seafaring adventures began.
