St Austell

St Austell is Cornwall's largest town and sits at the junction of the A390 and A391, making it easily accessible from the A30 via Bodmin or from the A38 through Liskeard. The town developed around china clay mining, and the white waste pyramids remain a striking feature of the landscape. It's a convenient base for visiting nearby attractions like Charlestown's historic harbour and the Eden Project, with Cornwall Airport Newquay about 15 miles away. The White River runs through the town center, coloured bright white by china clay sediment from the workings upstream.
