About Skelwith Bridge

Skelwith Bridge sits perfectly positioned in the Lake District between Ambleside and Coniston on the A593, making it an ideal base for exploring both the southern and central fells. The village lies where ancient packhorse routes crossed the River Brathay, now served by decent road connections to Grasmere and the smaller villages of Elterwater and Chapel Stile. The 1818 stone bridge that gives the village its name replaced earlier wooden crossings that couldn't withstand the Brathay's winter floods.
