Shincliffe lies just off the A177, three kilometres south of Durham city centre. This former pit village sits on a hillside in the Wear Valley, now serving mainly as a commuter settlement for Durham. The A177 provides the direct route from Durham, whilst the A1(M) at Junction 62 connects to longer-distance traffic via the A690. Shincliffe Cricket Club has occupied the same ground since 1887, with matches still played beside the original Victorian pavilion.
