Scowles

England

Scowles lies deep in the Forest of Dean, reached via the A4136 through Coleford or from the M50 Junction 4. This former mining area takes its name from the distinctive scowles - ancient iron ore workings that left behind a landscape of mysterious hollows and caves scattered through the woodland. The unusual terrain inspired parts of Tolkien's Middle-earth during his childhood visits here.
