Saddlescombe is a tiny South Downs hamlet near Poynings, reached via the A283 from the A23 or the B2117 from Brighton through winding downland lanes. Popular with South Downs Way walkers, it sits in a sheltered chalk valley between rolling hills. The settlement features one of England's only two surviving donkey wheel houses, where donkeys once powered an 18th-century water pump.
