Ruthven is a small farming town in northwest Iowa, sitting on Lost Island Lake about 15 miles east of Spencer via Highway 18. The area sees typical Midwest weather with snowy winters and humid summers. Most visitors arrive on Highway 18 from Interstate 35 or US 71, while locals make short trips to Spencer or the Iowa Great Lakes region to the north. The town's 1913 Carnegie Library remains one of the few original Carnegie libraries still operating in northwest Iowa.
