Rainier is a small logging town of 2,455 people in rural Thurston County, about 20 miles southeast of Olympia via Highway 507. The main route connects north to I-5 near Centralia or continues to Olympia for work and services. Dense forests and rolling hills surround the community, which grew around the timber industry. The restored early 1900s railroad depot downtown now houses the visitor center and local museum.
