Piet Retief

South African English DESCRIPTION Piet Retief, now officially Mkhondo, sits near the Eswatini border on the R33, with Vryheid about 103 km south and Ermelo linking up north toward the N17 into Gauteng. The R543 runs east to the Golela border post, making it a handy stopover for cross-border trips. It's dairy and timber country, on the Assegaai River, where highveld meets lowveld. EV charging is thin on the ground here, so plan ahead. Fun fact: the town's official name change in 2007 comes from the same river it straddles.
