Medical Lake is a small city of 5,000 people located 16 miles southwest of Spokane via I-90 and State Route 902. The 20-minute drive from Spokane makes it a popular bedroom community, while visitors from Seattle face a four-hour journey east across the mountains. The town sits near Fairchild Air Force Base and serves as a gateway to eastern Washington's recreational areas. Medical Lake gets its name from the mineral-rich alkaline lake at the city's center, which early settlers believed had healing properties.
