US Highway 171 runs right through town, making it easy to reach from Alexandria to the north or Lake Charles to the south. Highway 8 connects east-west across the parish. The city serves as Vernon Parish's county seat and sits near Fort Johnson, a major Army base that shapes much of the local economy and brings military families to the area.
