Knockbrex lies in Dumfries and Galloway's rolling countryside, reached via the A75 and A711 coastal route. The B727 provides a pleasant 14-kilometre drive to historic Kirkcudbright, whilst the A711 continues to Gatehouse of Fleet through typical Galloway farmland. The village name derives from Gaelic "cnoc breac," meaning "speckled hill," referring to the distinctive granite outcrops scattered across the landscape.
