Harrismith is that well-known stop-off on the N3 between Gauteng and Durban, sitting right under Platberg mountain in the eastern Free State. Locals nip through to Phuthaditjhaba or Kestell on the R712, while long-haul travellers come from as far as Morgan's Bay or Dewetsdorp. There's a small airport 10 km out and around 2 fast chargers nearby for EV drivers. Worth a stop just to ride the Platberg cableway, one of Africa's longest, before tackling Van Reenen's pass.
