The N2 national highway runs right past the town, linking it to both neighbours and to the wider coastal strip that stretches toward Cape Town in one direction and Port Elizabeth in the other. The town shares its name and much of its geography with the adjacent settlement of Great Brak River, just a kilometre up the road. Most visitors arrive off the N2, and the route data reflects a good mix of local and long-haul traffic. Drivers come in from as far as Springbok, Kamieskroon, and Philipstown for holidays along this stretch of coast, while day-trippers from nearby towns like Albertinia make the shorter run down for a beach visit or a meal by the lagoon. The N2 handles this traffic well, with clear signage through the Garden Route towns. Two airports serve the area. George Airport lies 23 km to the northwest, and Mossel Bay Airport is a similar distance to the east, both making Groot-Brakrivier an easy stopover for fly-in visitors renting a car. Around four public fast chargers are available nearby for electric vehicle drivers passing through, useful given the steady stream of coastal road trips along this section of the N2. The town grew up around a river mouth lagoon that still splits it into two halves, joined by a low bridge that floods over in heavy rains and forces a short detour inland until the water drops.
