From Letterkenny, take the N13 to Bridgend then connect to the R238, roughly 45 minutes through Donegal countryside. The ruins of a 14th-century castle built by Richard de Burgh, the Red Earl of Ulster, give the village its name and stand guard over the narrow entrance to the lough.
