3About Foynes
Foynes sits on the Shannon Estuary in County Limerick, famous as the landing spot for 1930s transatlantic flying boats like Pan Am's Yankee Clipper. The N69 coastal road brings you here from Limerick city 35 kilometres east, or you can come via the N21 through Adare from Cork. Shannon Airport is just 20 kilometres northeast. The town's harbour still has the original concrete ramp where those massive flying boats touched down, now home to the Flying Boat Museum that tells the story of Ireland's brief but important role in early transatlantic aviation.
