Doffcocker forms part of Bolton's western residential sprawl, easily reached via the A58 Chorley New Road or A666 from the M61 at Junction 6. The area sits on rising ground toward the West Pennines, with over 300 EV charging points available locally. The name derives from old Lancashire dialect, where "cocker" meant a small hill.
