Cowan Bridge is a small Lune Valley village on the A65 between Lancashire and Cumbria, positioned where the road crosses the River Leck. Most visitors pass through on the main east-west route connecting the Yorkshire Dales with the Lake District via Junction 36 of the M6. The village is famous as the site of the Clergy Daughters' School attended by Charlotte and Emily Brontë in 1824-25, which inspired the harsh Lowood School in Jane Eyre.
