The main approach from Manchester uses the M62 to junction 20, then the A627(M) and A646 through Rochdale. From Leeds, take junction 24 off the M62, then the A629 via Halifax. The settlement occupies elevated Pennine terrain where stone terraces cling to the hillsides. The name derives from the dramatic clough behind the village - a steep-sided valley carved by water erosion.
